Day of Service
At The Communications Network, we're guided by the values of Community, Learning, and Leadership. Two years ago, at ComNet17 in Miami Beach, we put those values to work to give back to the community hosting us in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
Since then, our Day of Service has become a ComNet tradition. We saw dozens of attendees raise their hands to lend time and support to worthy organizations in San Francisco, and we're again offering opportunities to help in Austin.
By signing up for our Day of Service, you'll not only be doing some good, but will also gain some new friends and have fun along the way. See our opportunities below.
Before signing up, please note:
You must be registered for the conference before signing up to participate.
All Day of Service options will be on Tuesday, October 1.
Participation is FREE for registered conference attendees.
Due to limited opportunity, you may only sign up for one volunteer shift.
Once all shifts are filled for an organization, a follow-up email will be sent outlining any special clothing consideration and safety/liability waiver forms.
You must fill out the liability waiver prior to the day of service. Delay in filling out the form may prevent participation.
Note: No cancellations or changes will be made after August 9th. If you would like to make a change, please email Stacy scervantes@comnetwork.org. The deadline to register is Monday, September 23rd.

Description: Last year, this 135,000 square-foot pantry provided nearly 47 million meals to 21 Central Texas Counties. In an area with over a 15 percent food insecurity rate, many families rely on its services to survive. Volunteers will inspect, clean, sort, box and prepare donated food to go out to partner agencies.

Capacity: 20 volunteers
Description: For 29 years, Out Youth has provided life-changing and life-saving programs and services to youths ages 12 to 23. Participants will have a unique opportunity to engage in a facilitated, half-day retreat with its communications team to give your perspective on its current online messaging and 30th anniversary campaign.

Capacity: 8-10 volunteers
Description: Community First! Village is a 51-acre master-planned community that supports the chronically homeless in Austin. A development of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, this community exists to love and serve its neighbors who have been living on the streets by providing affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community. Volunteers will work the village garden, help with various landscape maintenance, and other outdoor projects all with the aid of a community neighbor. Please note, this will require the ability to do physical activity outside.

Capacity: 20 volunteers
Description: Mothers’ Milk Bank dispenses more than 4 million ounces of pasteurized breast milk each year. The infants aided are seriously ill and/or premature, and most are currently in NICUs. This location is the milk bank that process donations from 49 national drop-off sites. Volunteers will label bags of milk (for identification, nutrition and expiration information), box orders to go to hospitals, and help with administrative tasks.

Capacity: 8-10 volunteers
Description: Every day, Carita’s downtown location feeds about 250 people per meal. In addition to hosting an open kitchen (no questions asked), it also provided housing for over 500 families this past year. Volunteers will get a kitchen orientation and help serve in the community kitchen by preparing, serving, and cleaning up lunch for its guests. Please note, participants will need to be able to stand and work the entire shift.
